Teaching and Learning Resources at the Research Libraries: Access and Borrowing Programs

This guide pulls together resources available to educators through The New York Public Library Research Libraries

NYPL Access and Borrowing Programs

While most Research Libraries materials are available for use onsite only, the following borrowing programs are available.

MaRLI - Manhattan Research Libraries Initiative

The Manhattan Research Library Initiative (MaRLI) is a joint borrowing program between the New York Public Library, NYU and Columbiawhich serves as a means to expand access to our research collections in order to better serve our researchers.  The program offers approved NYPL cardholders with a demonstrable research need the ability to borrow select NYPL general research materials usually reserved for onsite use, and to access and borrow materials unavailable at NYPL from NYU and Columbia. MaRLI members may also borrow select materials from Princeton and Columbia's collections held at ReCAP, through the ReCAP Shared Collection

For more information, and to submit an application, please visit NYPL's MaRLI webpage here: https://www.nypl.org/help/research-services/MaRLI

Interlibrary Services

Interlibrary Services provides access to materials held at libraries outside the NYPL system. Books, microfilm, and other non-print materials can be borrowed for use in the research libraries or for circulation outside of the Library. Articles may be requested and delivered electronically through this service.

NYPL maintains partner relationships with major academic libraries as well as national institutions such as the Library of Congress, National Library of Medicine, and the Center for Research Libraries. We also borrow manuscript materials on microfilm from archival organizations such as the Archives of American Art and state historical societies.  We will attempt to acquire materials from institutions outside of the United States as well.

For more detailed information, see the Interlibrary Services and Document Delivery webpage here:

CUNY Graduate Center

For CUNY Graduate Center affiliates

Because of our long-standing relationship with the CUNY Graduate Center (GC), NYPL offers increased borrowing privileges for CUNY GC affiliates, allowing them to borrow select NYPL research materials usually reserved for on-site use.  In order to take advantage of these additional privileges, no additional forms are required: interested GC students and faculty should register by bringing their GC ID card to one of the four NYPL research libraries (the Science, Industry and Business Library, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the Library for the Performing Arts, or the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture) so their records can be updated.

METRO Referrals

METRO referrals provide courtesy access to many academic, school, public, and special libraries throughout New York City and Westchester County. If you are unable to locate an item in the Library catalog, please see staff at an information desk. Bring all citation details with you. Library staff can issue METRO referalls to participating METRO libraries
