The Change the Subject Project at NYPL, BPL, and BookOps: Programming

About

A program of public events were planned to publicize the libraries’ efforts with New Yorkers and included screenings of the Change the Subject documentary followed by panel discussions with student activists, librarians involved in the project, and library colleagues undertaking similar efforts. These and other programs raised awareness of the challenges inherent in the existing library classification systems and highlighted the role library users can play in advocating for reforms.

Additionally, Brooklyn Public Library undertook a community engagement process to better understand how library staff and patrons feel about classification language used in the library catalog. BPL engaged with THE CITY to convene a series of small group meetings with staff and patrons, and to facilitate community conversation in select branch libraries.
