1890 New York City Police Census: 1890 NYC

The city of New York did not trust the accuracy of the population count in the 1890 federal census.  The enumeration for New York county—which included Manhattan and sections of the Bronx from Kingsbridge to the South Bronx west of the Bronx River—totaled 1,515,301.  In response, the city conducted its own census, resulting in an increased total of 1,710,715.  Carried out by officers of the police department and covering only New York county, the census is referred to as the 1890 New York City Police Census, or the Manhattan Police Census.
