Communal Institutions and Organizations

Important reference works in our collection are:

- The American Jewish Year Book provides listing and basic information about national Jewish organizations. The volumes from 1899 to 2008 are available in print, on the Internet and in searchable mode in our database. The American Jewish Committee ceased publishing the journal in 2009. 

  • The 2010 Jewish population estimates for the US and the World sponsored by the Berman Jewish DataBank (then the North American Jewish Data Bank), were designed to continue the population estimate series formerly supported by the before it decided to suspend publication of the American Jewish Year Book. These are freely available from the Berman Jewish DataBank website, here.
  • Publication of the American Jewish Year Book resumed with the issue for 2012. Earlier volumes of the new series are available onsite at the NYPL as online resources; the most current issues are available in hard copy through our Shared Collections.

- The Jewish communal register of New York City, 1917-1918 available both online and in print.

Jewish Camps

Searching the subject heading Jewish Camps in our Shared Collection Catalog provides 27 subheadings.  Among them are Jewish camps -- New York (State), or Jewish camps -- United States.

- JCC Association of North America camps.

- The Wikipedia site of Jewish summer camps leads to informative pages, with bibliographies, about the history, ideology, and programs of the camps.

A directory for New York and New Jersey - Jewish cemeteries in the New York City/Northern New Jersey area compiled by Edward L. Rosenbaum.

Charity organizations

Resources at NYPL:

- Searching the subject heading Jews -- Charities in our Shared Collection Catalog provides more than 25 subheadings. Among them are Jews -- Charities -- Periodicals, and Jews -- Charities -- History.

- An important periodical on this subject is the Jewish social service quarterly by the National Conference of Jewish Communal Service in Albany, N.Y.

- Wikipedia’s page Jewish Charities based in the United States provides information and links to specific charities.

- Directory of Charities and Nonprofit Organizations by GuideStar lists more than 4,000 organizations.  

- The Wikipedia page Charities based in Israel provides information and links to    specific charities.

- Latet - Charity Organizations in Israel This NGO serves as an umbrella organization for 180 local associations. Their website is in Hebrew, English, and  French.

Fraternal organizations - Landsmanshaftn

Resources at NYPL: 

- Conduct an Advanced Search using subject words Fraternal organizations with the subject word Jews results in a list of more than 300 items in our collection about various Landsmanshaftn. 

- A detailed list, here, includes the location of the Landsmanshaft, the name of the organization, the title of the item, the year and the language in which it was published, and its call number with a hyperlink to its record in our catalog.

- JewishGen’s website provides a list of Landsmanshaftn organizations in Israel which is edited from published sources, circa 1996.

Jewish Libraries

- An important periodical on this subject is Judaica Librarianship, published by the Association of Jewish Libraries. It has been published online since 2012; earlier issues are available in hard copy as well as online.
