Nelson Mandela Resource Guide: Further Archival Resources

South Africa's National Archives and Records Service exceed 140 kilometers of shelving space, comprising records in a variety of media. This includes paper-based textual records, electronic records as well as audio-visual, photographic and cartographic material. As the National Archives and Records Service is a public archive, its records originate in the main from the execution of the business of governmental bodies. The records reflect the activities of governments in South Africa and their impact on the lives of ordinary people since the middle of the 17th century. The records are generated at the national, provincial and local government level, and include court records, estate papers of deceased, records of property rights and tenure. The National Archive of South Africa contain 128 documents related to Nelson Mandela.

The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory was inaugurated by Nelson Mandela on September 21, 2004, and endorsed as the core work of the Foundation in 2006. The Centre focuses on three areas of work: the Life and Time of Nelson Mandela, Dialogue for Social Justice and Nelson Mandela International Day. The centre's aim is to locate, document, digitize, and provide access to all archival materials related to Nelson Mandela.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation delivers to the world an integrated, dynamic and trusted resource on the legacy of Nelson Mandela and, with this, the foundation mandates to promote his vision and work by convening dialogues and creating platforms for engagement around critical issues to promote social justice.

The University of Cape Town Libraries Special Collections consists of printed and audio-visual materials on African studies and a wide array of other specialized subjects, as well as over 1,300 sub-collections of unique manuscripts and personal papers. The collection of books and pamphlets exceeds 85,000 items on African studies. The University of Cape Town holds 730 documents related to Nelson Mandela.

The Apartheid Museum opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story. The museum is a beacon of hope showing the world how South Africa is coming to terms with its oppressive past and working towards a future that all South Africans can call their own.

A significant percentage of the District Six Museum's collection exists as documentary evidence of people’s lives in District Six and in Cape Town. This includes a newspaper record from the 1940's to the present day, original identification cards, posters and pamphlets, and also original correspondence and legal documents. The Resource Center is the main gateway for learners and researchers accessing documentary and educational material on District Six. Access to copies of original documents is provided through the Resource Center.

The Helen Suzman Foundation was founded in 1993 and has consistently promoted the liberal democratic values that informed Helen Suzman's work throughout her public life, and that she so clearly demonstrated in her devotion to public service.

The Apartheid Archives Project is an international research initiative that aims to examine the nature of the experiences of racism of particularly South Africans under the old apartheid order and their continuing effects on individual and group functioning in contemporary South Africa.
