"African American bookstores and bibliophiles (book lovers) have played an integral part in black intellectual life. The early bibliophiles often became booksellers as well, and their collections formed the nucleus of many of the outstanding special black collections in libraries, particularly those in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)."
