Introduction

The Schomburg Center has a wealth of resources across divisions that document African American theater and African American theater makers dating back to the 19th century. To help provide an overview of these resources, this research guide highlights key collections and works at the Schomburg Center. The guide is organized by division beginning with the Research and Reference Division. Resources in the special collections including Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books and Moving Image & Recorded Sound are also highlighted. The guide includes information about relevant collections at Library for the Performing Arts and the Schwarzman Library, which are other research libraries within the NYPL system. There's also a page dedicated to the American Negro Theatre which was a legendary theater company in residence in the basement of what was then called the 135th St. Library and is now the Schomburg Center For Research in Black Culture.
