This study focuses on the decade (1942-1952) when the Abstract Expressionists matured as artists and created their most important works, and also identifies the distinctly American character of Abstract Expressionism, in particular the painters Irving Sandler selects as the movement's most important figures: Jackson Pollock and Clyfford Still.

The artist’s first solo exhibition was held at the Betty Parsons Gallery, New York, in 1958. Partly through close friendships with artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Ad Reinhardt, Martin began to experiment with symmetrical compositions of rectangles or circles within a square, then from around 1960-61 to work with grids of delicate horizontal and vertical lines to her horizontal divisions of the 1980s, using ethereal, pale pastel and somber grays to build more robust, opaque surfaces.

This monograph examines the work of Alma Thomas, a member of the Color Field Painting and a pioneer among African-American artists working in abstraction. She started her painting career at 68, after retiring from teaching art to junior high school students. J.M.W. Turner's daringly loose brushwork and dazzling colors shine in his watercolors. A member of the New York Abstract Expressionism, Joan Mitchell remains exemplary as an artist able to lay bare each decision of the brush, in long, curving strokes, luminous colours and tangles of paint on often unprimed canvases. Known for his black-and-white work, Jacques Henri Lartigue loved color film. He experimented with the Autochrome process in the teens and twenties and also Ektachrome in the late 1940s. Lartigue’s color photographs that document the French countryside, the women in his life, famous friends (Pablo Picasso, Federico Fellini), and his travels fill this playful book.

Color proved to be one of Lszlo Moholy-Nagy’s most important mediums, during his early years in Germany, and as he reestablished himself at the New Bauhaus and also the Institute of Design in Chicago. This exhibition catalogue explores the evolution of Kandinskky’s work from the Blaue Reiter to the Bauhaus years. During this period, Kandinsky developed his abstract style and began to move beyond conventional easel painting. Andre Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, and Henri Matisse were the founders of Fauvism, an early 20th century modern art movement whose practitioners used flat areas of brilliant colors and spontaneous brushwork. Fauvism has often been compared to German Expressionism that emerged around the same time.

Yves Klein identified himself as "the painter of space." He is best known for using an ultramarine blue of his own invention patented as International Klein Blue to achieve immaterial spirituality. He also worked with gold, pink, and white. For his 1958 solo exhibition "The Void," he presented an empty white gallery space that marked the beginning of the white cube concept.
