Guide to the Schomburg Center's Photographs and Prints Division: Photographers' Portfolios

Photographers' Portfolios

The Photographs and Prints Division is strong in its holdings of fine art and documentary photographers' portfolios.

The Division's portfolios often contain large-format photographs by a single photographer, and in many cases comprise a photo series on a given subject. Among P&P's portfolios are two of the Division's largest collections, the Austin Hansen collection and the Morgan and Marvin Smith collection. Both collections originated from Harlem-based photography studios, and extensively document Harlem's social, cultural, and political life during the 20th century.

Other photographers include:

  • Dawoud Bey
  • Chester Higgins, Jr.
  • Kamoinge Workshop
  • Rómulo Lachatañeré
  • Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe
  • Gordon Parks
  • Richard Saunders
  • Coreen Simpson
  • Carrie Mae Weems
  • James Van Der Zee

Photographers' portfolios can be found by searching the NYPL Legacy Catalog (narrowed down to "Schomburg Photographs and Prints" under "Collection") and searching for the word "portfolio" as keyword.
