Guide to resources related to the Negro Motorist/Traveler's Green Book

About the Afro-American's Travel Guide

The Afro-American's Travel Guide (Afro Travel Guide) was first published in 1939 by the Afro-American Company, which published African American newspapers such as the Baltimore Afro-AmericanUnlike the other travel guides mentioned in this research guide, the Afro Travel Guide mostly consisted of lists of lodgings, including hotels, motels, guest houses, resorts and Y.M.C.A's. There are no maps, or heavy promotions of tourist destinations and entertainment. This guide was created with a utilitarian purpose, it included a pocket to hold maps, timetables and identification, as well as charts to budget your trip. The Afro-American's Travel Guide is available in the Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Reference Division.
