How to Research an Artist: Women Artists

An introduction to finding information about visual artists, architects, fashion designers etc.... Guide by Miguel Rosales.

Introduction

Bust of Mark Twain by Theresa Federowna Ries.

For much of history, women were rarely accepted and praised for their creativity and artistic creations, despite making all types of artwork. Writers and researchers created books and biographical indices specific to women artists, to have women artists recognized in art history and archives, and to rectify historical sidelining.

The books below cover a wide range of history (from medieval art to contemporary art), as well as a variety of artistic mediums. We hope that this page will help researchers interested in women artists, who may be more difficult to find in historical canonical texts and scholarship of art history.

Theresa Federowna Ries (1874 - 1956) was a Russian born Austrian painter and sculptor. She primarily worked in stone, marble, plaster, and bronze. She is well known for the photograph on the left, of her sculpting a bust of American writer Mark Twain in 1897 during the time he resided in Vienna.
