Getting Started Using The New York Public Library's Research Collections from Home: Library Cards

This guide is intended for remote users of the research units of The New York Public Library, particularly the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building

Anyone is welcome obtain a New York Public Library card.  You can complete an online application and then present photo ID and proof of address at any one of our locations.  A card is required to access most research materials. The same card is used in our research and circulating libraries.

All New York Public Library cards have an expiration date:

- If you live or work or go to school or pay taxes in New York State, your card is valid for three years

- If you do not meet those criteria, your card is valid for three months and can be renewed by visiting one of our locations in person
