Kwame Nkrumah Resource Guide: Art and Artifacts Division

Posters manufactured between 1940 and 1990 (primarily the 70's and 80's), bearing information on African countries excluding the Republic of South Africa. Countries covered include Somalia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Ghana, Cameroon, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Ethiopia, Angola, Nigeria, Uganda, Malawi, the Ivory Coast and the Sudan. The collection includes political campaign posters, tourism posters, protest posters, conference posters, posters designed for classroom use and others. They were produced by a variety of agencies and corporations including the U.S. Government Printing Office, Afram, the OAU, various African government information agencies, the UN and its divisions, Anheuser Busch and others. Topics covered include history, politics, economic status and art.

Political and protest posters cover a variety of topics. They present maps of Africa; show portraits of political leaders or political candidates; call for the support of various political movements (including SWAPO, ZAPU, the National Resistance Movement in Uganda, the Pan African Liberation Committee, DTA, OAU, NPN and others).

The collection consists of posters, produced during the 1970s and 1980s, representing the movement to end the political system of apartheid in the Republic of South Africa. Posters contain messages opposing apartheid and calling for civil rights for black South Africans; demanding freedom for South African political prisoners including African National Congress (ANC) leader Nelson Mandela; urging boycotts of industries doing business in South Africa, specifically the Shell Oil Company; representing support from international anti-apartheid groups; and calling for unity between the ANC and the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), Namibia's nationalist movement. Items were produced in Africa, Europe, the United States, and Japan, as well as by the United Nations.
