You will find valuable advice for preparing and writing resumes and cover letters on the Career Cruising database's Employment section. Start by login to Career Cruising by clicking on the link below and logging in with your NYPL library card and PIN. First, create an account to save your research and to be able to use the (My Plan) feature. Click on the Employment tab, and then go to the Resumes or Letter Writing sections. See below for more details.
Career Cruising is a comprehensive bilingual (English and Spanish) interactive multimedia source which features profiles and information on hundreds of occupations, 2 and 4 year college and universities, and financial aid, including scholarship opportunities.
In the Letter Writing section, you will find Effective Letter Writing Strategies, Quick Tips, Dos' and Don'ts, and Cover Letter Content. You will also find tips for writing a thank you letter for a job interview and writing follow-up letters after being declined for a job, rejecting a job offer, or accepting a job offer.
In the Resumes section, you will find information that will describe a resume's writing process step by step. It covers the content and presentation of a resume, possible sections and sub-sections, effective bullet points, and types of resumes (chronological, functional, and combination).
In the Employment section, you can also find the Build My Resume feature, which will allow you to type your resume and download it as an MS Word document, Plain Text, or to print it. If you created an account and activated the My Plan feature, then the information you have saved in your plan can be used to write your resume using Build My Resume. You can choose from three resume styles: professional, elegant, and contemporary. All follow a chronological resume format.
