Cover Letters & Resumes: About

Resources for writing cover letters and resumes.

Purpose of this LibGuide

The purpose of this guide is to provide a variety of library resources that will help you write a resume and a cover letter. You will find print and electronic resources to assist you in the resume and cover letter writing process. Print resources such as paperback books and electronic resources such as online articles, audiobooks, databases, and ebooks. You will also view video courses that will show you how to write resumes and cover letters. Also, you will be able to download resume templates in various formats and cover letter templates.

A resume summarizes your experiences (such as work, volunteer, and extracurricular activities), educational background, and relevant skills that highlight your qualifications for jobs, internships, specialized programs, or positions.

The purpose of a resume is to get an interview. A resume is like an advertisement: it must attract attention, create interest, and generate action on the reader's part. A good resume will lead an employer to invite you to discuss, at an interview, how your background and personality fit the organization (Career Cruising).

The three common resume formats are chronological, functional, and combination resumes.

A chronological resume lists your work experience in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent position at the top. This is the most traditional resume format and, for many years, remained the most common.

A functional resume is best if you have multiple employment gaps, are switching careers with little to no experience in the industry you’re applying, or are re-entering the workforce after a lengthy break.

A combination resume is a blend of the chronological and functional resume types. This resume format lets you emphasize your work experience and relevant skills (Indeed.com).
