Historical Fashion Plates

Intended for wealthy clients, “fashion plates” first appeared in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries but grew in popularity during the Victorian era.

The following titles are a sample of the Library's large collection of historical fashion plates published in European and American magazines.

Historical Titles

Scholarly literature on costume history and fashion theory began in earnest in the mid-to-late 1960s. The first important fashion theory publications treated clothing as a key symptom of social change.
